Fire at Hetzel Plaza in State College, PA
Why do people hold emotional attachments to objects? With a large format film camera and a recorder I explore the concept.
Madden's Barber Shop from Katherine Rodriguez on Vimeo.
State College, Pa- Since 1956, Elmer Madden has held a job as a barber on Allen street in State College, Pennsylvania.
He bought his first shop in 1960, from an owner who was picketed after refusing to cut black hair. It was located in Pickles’ current space and was there for 20 years. He has been at his current space at 111 South Allen Street for 30 years.
Madden has had a wide range of customers from students to the President of the University just this month. Over the years he has seen evolution of hair trends in State College. From flat tops to princeton cuts, the “hippie” period to today’s short buzz cuts, Madden has seen it all.
"I’m at the age where I need to retire," says Madden.
He plans on remaining in state college and keeping his daily routine of eating breakfast at the Corner Room.
"I’ll just gradually change my routine from day to day. Maybe I’ll do more with my grandsons."
He will be handing over the business to Cristy Orso on January 1st, 2012. Orso has been cutting hair for 13 years at Rinaldo’s.
"I feel real good about it. She’s a real Nice Person." says Madden. "I encourage [customers] to give Christy a try.

I stopped by Zuccotti Park on Friday, November 25 to see the Occupy Wall Street protesters with my own eyes. I’m really happy I did, and I urge anyone who is interested in learning about what these people are doing to go and talk to them, they all have a story to tell. A few minutes after entering the park the police vacated the area and forced the protesters to leave. It was amazing to see their persistence as they continued to march around the park. I hope to visit them once again and perhaps come back with more personal stories into who these people are and why they feel it is their duty to participate in this protest.
Laurel Petrilionis and Ricardo Morales share a moment of silence at the We Are the 99% protest on College avenue Thursday, November 17th, 2011 in State College Pa. The movement aims to gain the attention of Senator Pat Toomey to create jobs not cuts.
This week was probably one of the most influential weeks of my life. You probably have heard of the Penn State scandal that came to media attention last Saturday. Being a Penn State student, I was greatly affected. This week I learned that this is truly what I wanted to do. Covering the press conference, the riot, and the candle light vigil, I really felt where I belonged- with a camera in my hand and curiosity in my heart.
